Principal UI/UX Designer · Victoria, AU
Hi, I'm Mugs Balakrishnan.
I help organisations make their digital services clearer and easier to use, especially in government, community services, and public-facing services where it genuinely matters.

I came up through software development, nearly a decade writing code and leading technical teams before making the shift into design. That background shapes how I work in ways that matter: I can sit in a technical discussion and understand what's actually feasible, write specs that developers can act on with confidence, and make design decisions that hold up when they meet engineering reality.
The move into UX was a natural extension of that. I was already thinking about how systems should behave and how people interact with them. Design gave me the language and methods to do that work properly.
Most of what I do sits at the intersection of research, structure, and plain language. I care about whether something works, whether a resident can submit a request without calling, whether a form makes sense to someone with low digital confidence, and whether the navigation reflects how people actually think about a service.
