Who are you?

I’ve spent my career learning how to bring clarity to digital work.

Hi, I’m Mugunthan Balakrishnan (pronounced Moon-then), but most people like to call me Mugs — a friendly nickname based on the first three letters of my name.

UX Consultant

My path into UX design has been shaped by over 25 years in digital design and technology. I began as a graphic designer in 1998, transitioned into software development in the early 2000s, and founded my first tech business in 2007. In those early years, my main focus was building platforms that functioned well. It was through this work that I began to understand the importance of recognising and meeting the needs and expectations of users.

My interest in the balance between business goals and user needs naturally led me toward human-centred design. Over time, I learned how to bring both sides together—combining the structure of software with the clarity and intent of thoughtful design.

Journey from design to
user experience

From early days in graphic design to software and now UX, every step has been about finding the balance between how things look, how they work, and how people actually use them.

Specialisation: Public and Community design

Since 2017, I’ve worked with organisations such as the Department of Health, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, and several not-for-profits — designing digital services that support housing, employment, safety, and access for diverse communities.

Over time, this became my specialisation: helping teams make their services easy to use, guiding people to take the right steps, and turning complex actions into simple, seamless experiences.
